Psalm 40 is both a psalm of lament and a psalm of Thanksgiving. Lament is a legitimate Christian response to God in the face of a world that is not as God intended. Through lament, we confess that “It’s not supposed to be this way,” that we are part of the problem of sin in the world, and that God is the only one who can ultimately rescue us.
