Biblical leprosy meant quarantine, a total “social distancing” from the life of the community. It was essentially a death sentence, living in isolation until death. Jesus chooses to bring the authority of God to reverse this banishment. Through the touch of his hand, Jesus is not contaminated but instead brings God’s cleansing, healing, and inclusion to a person who is thereby restored to the community and given new life.
