Jesus uses a word translated as "alms" in the King James Version of the bible. This word is derived from a root word that means mercy and is often translated compassion. God's mercy is something that is a secret grace for each of us. The things we have done that God forgives is between each of us and Him. Likewise, He asks us to extend compassion in secret because He, in secret, extends mercy and forgiveness to us.
