The disciples were watching Jesus pray. They responded by asking Jesus to teach them to pray in a way that was practical (like John passed on a similar teaching to his disciples). Jesus teaches prayer through the lens of the contemporary experience of hearing the Jewish leaders who prayed hypocritically. The pure way to pray is to start with "Our Father" who has a heavenly kingdom that is eternal and will bring it to earth.
